Frequently Asked Questions about Qoya
It's normal to have questions when trying something new! Here are some answers to common queries about Qoya. If you don't find what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to reach out – we're always happy to chat.
What is Qoya?
Qoya is a movement practice based on the idea that through movement, we remember our essence is wise, wild, and free. It blends the wisdom of yoga with the creative expression of dance and the feminine movement that feels good in your body. It's designed to help you connect deeply with yourself, feel empowered, and have fun!
What does the word Qoya mean?
The word Qoya comes from the Quechuan language of Peru and means "queen". It's a reminder of the inherent power and wisdom within each of us.
What should I wear to a Qoya class?
Wear comfortable clothes that you can move freely in. Layers are always a good idea so you can adjust to the temperature of the room. Think yoga pants, leggings, a comfy top, and maybe a cozy sweater for the cool-down.
What should I bring to a Qoya class?
Bring a water bottle and an open mind! We provide yoga mats, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer. A journal and pen can be useful if you like to jot down thoughts or reflections after class. Most importantly, bring a sense of curiosity and a willingness to explore movement in a new way.
Can I do Qoya if I have an injury or mobility issues?
Absolutely! Qoya is for every body. There are no levels, no right or wrong way to move. You can adapt the movements to suit your needs and what feels good for you on any given day. If you have any concerns, please have a chat with me before class.
Who created Qoya?
Qoya was created by Rochelle Schieck, who was inspired by women's empowerment, goddess studies, and embodiment practices.
Do I need any experience to do Qoya?
Not at all! There are no levels in Qoya. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their dance experience or fitness level.
Is it embarrassing? Will I feel self-conscious?
We get it – trying something new can feel a bit vulnerable. But in Qoya, we create a brave and supportive space where you can let go of judgment and move freely. We never use mirrors, so the focus is on how the movement feels rather than how it looks.
This is my first time, am I doing it right?
Yes, you are! There's no "right" way to do Qoya. It's about listening to your body and moving in a way that feels good to you. Trust your intuition and enjoy the process.
What's included in each class?
Qoya classes are a blend of movement, connection, and ritual. We'll dance, we'll flow through some yoga-inspired stretches, we'll connect with our breath, and we'll create space for stillness and reflection. Each class has a unique theme to guide our exploration, and we always leave time for sharing and community connection.
Can anyone do Qoya?
Yes! Qoya is an accessible practice for all bodies and all levels of experience. The most important "muscle" we use in Qoya is the ability to listen to our bodies and move in a way that feels good. Qoya is adaptable and suitable for people with chronic pain and all mobility levels.
